Chemical and Physical change

We have been learning about chemical and physical changes in science. A physical change can be undone like mixing ingredients together, you could go back and sift out the ones you want and separate them again. Whereas a chemical change changes the ingredients into something else. When you bake a cake you cannot then separate the ingredients from each other.

We made sherbet in class and experimented on the chemical change that happened in our mouths when the citric acid mixed with the baking soda which is a base.

We have been learning about Earthquakes.

Our task last week and this week was to decide what would happen for the 3 little pigs if their house in Lyttelton Christchurch was struck by a 8.9 Earthquake. First, the students drew a picture of what they believed the house would look like. Most students drew a pile of rubble. They then shared these on their blogs. The second task was to create a 3D model of where the pigs would move to within New Zealand. To help the students they had a map of the faultlines and tectonic plates. After constructing the model the students chose what sort of terrain would be in the area they had chosen. Based on that the houses were then placed in an earthquake simulator. Check out their blog slides with their videos embedded.

Exploring Blogs

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we were exploring blogs. We had to find information from other student's blogs as well as statistics. We compared the blogs by putting the information in a table.

Do you have a blog? How many blog posts do you have on yours? How many visitors have you had on your blog? We are thinking of ways to get more traffic on our blogs.

Here is Aimie's work from today. She has thought about her blog. Look on slide 4 and 5 for her ideas.

Kawa of Care and Quality Blog Posts

In our Cybersmart lessons we have been aiming to share quality blog posts.

Here is Camille's work. Do you think this is a quality blog post? Please read it and comment on Camille's blog here.

Today I was learning about the kawa of care and how we can take care of our chromebooks. We watched a video about how we can take care of our chromebooks.  I pretty much knew most of the things it said in the video, but i did learn a few new things. I learnt that we shouldn't pile things on top of our keyboards because, if we do they keyboard might break and not function well.  The kawa of care is a list of rules we should follow to make sure our chromebooks do not break and malfunction.

I enjoyed making the kawa of care slides and i also enjoyed learning about how we can take care of our chromebooks. I also liked how we have the kawa of care because it helps us be safe around our chromebooks and to take care of them.

I found it challenging to type the down the text in time. I also found it challenging to take my picture of my face because the classroom was a bit too bright. I also found it hard to find the right keyboard picture because there kinda weren't that much options to choose from.

My digital learning object shows I can add words to shapes, replace images with my camera app, use the Explore tool to find images we can reuse, change backgrounds and change fonts.

Next time I would change the slide colors to more cooler tones so it would look more pleasing to the eye. I would also change the keyboard picture and my photo.

R.E value challenge!

This week, our school was set a challenge. We had to create a poster displaying this term's school value FAITH, WHAKAPONO. We talked about what faith looks like, feels like and sounds like. We discussed synonyms for faith and searched the Bible and the internet for quotes. Then we started creating our posters. The challenge finishes on Friday so some of us will have our posters up on our individual blogs by then.

Code Life

This week Room 3 children have been learning about how video games work. They have been reading articles online and writing explanation pieces about the coding behind the scenes. Today they had to tell Miss Steele on a Flipgrid video what they have learnt so far.
Some of the videos were very entertaining and of course, informative!

Solar Power by Luke

We have been studying Solar Power.
Read Luke's blog post about this learning...

I was learning about solar energy. We used a car for solar energy, it had a solar panel on the top of it and when it was in the sun it drove itself forward. I found it interesting.

Hannah's Art Competition

Do you like art competitions?
Hannah entered on in lockdown.

First week back at school

We were so excited to be back at school. This week we tried to continue some of the online learning we had started. This was all about computational thinking and coding. We set up a breakout game based on coding and we were successful in breaking in just in the knick of time!
We also created a physical computer - one student was the programmer, one the bot and one the computer. It was hard to not think like a human and to just read or follow the instruction written even if it was wrong!

School Liturgy - 11th May

We gathered as a school community in prayer and song .  Today we learned that Jesus is the way, truth and life.  By sharing the love of Jesus we are building our relationship with God.

We recognised students from each class both digital and school classrooms. The shout out from Room 3 went to Emma for her great learning and for being a fabulous teacher assistant during our digital class meetings.  Congratulations Emma!

Modelled writing lesson

This week we have been learning about how electronics work. We read a text about a group of students at a school who used mini computers linked to electronic circuits to create a representation of the Matariki stars. This triggered our learning tasks where we had a go at making virtual circuits from scratch and then we wrote a simple explanation describing this.

Celebrating a terrific learner in Room 3

Today in our whole school live liturgy /assembly room 3 acknowledged a learner who had been working with his family to complete his learning tasks. He shares his learning through his blog and starts each blog post with his karakia and ends with his karakia. We love seeing the students share learning with us in relation to their learning tasks given each day. Well done Benjamin.
Click here to visit his blog. Feel free to leave a Positive, Thoughtful, Helpful comment.

Monday week 2 Remote Learning

It was lovely to connect with everyone this morning and find out what you have been doing to keep yourself busy. Lots of people have been enjoying going for family bike rides and drawing. We are using our class site to share learning challenges each day. Here we are together looking through our learning for this week, asking questions and checking in.

Thursday 16th April

Today our learning google meeting focused on writing. We looked at a model of writing that had lots of adjectives and verbs, we then recrafted it to add in adverbs. Adverbs are new learning.
The students then requested a video to help them with this task so I used Screen Castify to model how to FILE MAKE A COPY, File it and then work on their own copy. This is something we practice in Manaialakani CyberSmart lessons too!
